The paleopathological and taphonomical context in human evolution and its records

This paper contains a summary of the problematic areas of paleopathology, considers methodology and stresses the important role of taphonomy in this research. A global overview about the implications of Paleopathological research in a very large number of scientific fields is provided, with a synthesis of the related disciplines which come together in Paleoecology. It provides information on how the process of biological evolution has taken place parallel with the evolution of disease in human populations, together with their interactions with historical events. It also considers the results of the paleopathological research in fossil hominids and human populations of the Holocene.ResumenEste trabajo contiene un resumen de la problemática paleopatógica, hace consideraciones metodológicas y resalta el importante papel de la tafonomía en estas investigaciones. En primer lugar, sin perder el sentido de unidad, contiene, en una visión de conjunto, una síntesis de disciplinas relacionadas que convergen en la paleoecología e informan sobre cómo ha tenido lugar el proceso de evolución biológica paralelamente a la evolución de la enfermedad en las poblaciones humanas, en su interrelación con los acontecimientos históricos. También contiene algunas consideraciones sobre los resultados de las investigaciones paleopatológicas llevadas a cabo en homínidos fósiles y de poblaciones humanas del Holoceno.
