Abstract
Due in great part to the dedication of Prof. Ikemi, the Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine was founded in 1959, and the first Institute of Psychosomatic Medicine at a university in Japan was established at Kyushu University in 1961. His motivation to psychosomatic medicine was brought about by his personal experience of suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. An aspect of Prof. Ikemi's greatness is that he was able to develop the processes of solutions to personal psychosomatic problems to the level of learning (psychosomatic medicine).
