The clinical laboratory performs the tests requested on patients. The laboratory reports these results to patients or their medical doctors in paper or electronic form, within the established response time and under the institutional regulations. Occasionally, the importance of the data obtained, forces to immediate communication with the health personnel in charge. All laboratory staff must know how to detect and inform these critical values. We have reviewed regulations and common concepts, such as detection, reporting and documentation procedures of the critical values in clinical laboratory.
