Abstract

•Warm mix asphalt additives decrease mixing and compaction of mixtures.•Maximum amount of RAP utilization is achieved with the organic WMA additive.•Stability and tensile strength values involving RAP are higher than control mixtures.•Increment is seen in the RAP content with using higher penetration grade bitumen.

This paper describes the feasibility of utilizing three different warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives prepared with B50/70 bitumen with different percentages of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). The mechanical properties of WMA containing RAP have been analyzed and compared with WMA without RAP. Following the determination of optimum RAP content along with the suitable WMA additive prepared at B50/70 bitumen, the grade of bitumen has been changed and the effects on the variation of RAP contents have been investigated. The results indicated that, WMA systems provides significant benefits with regards to the environment and that mixtures containing RAP exhibit performance level better than control mixtures. Moreover, it is possible to consider that an increment is seen in the content of RAP with using higher penetration grades bitumen prepared with the organic WMA additive.
