Abstract
“Taking care” in critical care can be conceived as a value that promotes patient-centered care, based on professional knowledge. Patients share this perspective by valuing skills based on professional knowledge and attitudes such as presence and respect. Activities that support a regular contact with families, patients' photographs in their usual environment, writing in a patient diary facilitate patient-centered care. Other activities such as the use of augmentative communication techniques, assistance with phonation and early multi-disciplinary mobilization therapy programs promote autonomy and empowerment.
