Abstract
Myocardial stunning is defined by a transient contractile dysfunction secondary to an episode of coronary hypoperfusion, which is also transient. The phenomenon of myocardial post-ischemic stunning is part of the natural history of coronary artery disease and significantly contributes to the morbidity associated with this pathology. The physiological mechanisms involved are complex and depend on combined toxicity of calcium and free radicals on myocytes. Currently, care of myocardial stunning remains difficult and treatment options include symptomatic treatment and cardioprotective approach.
