Abstract
This review is expected to help physicians in charge of thromboembolic disease and insists on deep-venous thrombosis in medical patient. It concerns the actual state of art: epidemiology, risk factors, prophylaxis, diagnosis, treatment and perspectives and relies on the recent international American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) guidelines. Probability scores, D-dimer dosages, ultrasonography are joined together, in order to have decisional algorithms that give secure and standardized procedures for the diagnosis. Major indications of prophylaxis and major treatment guidelines concerning medical patients are summarized. Perspectives from new antithrombotics and actual trials with their topics and objectives are evoked: prophylaxis for medical patients, treatment of distal deep-venous thrombosis, treatment of superficial thrombosis, and validation of emergency physicians training to a limited two-points ultrasonography in order to test future new algorithms.
