Abstract
The acute complications of diabetes mellitus lead frequently to admission to emergency department and intensive care unit. The pathophysiology of the hyperglycemic complications is almost similar. Their treatment relies on the same principles: fluid infusion, insulin therapy and correction of the electrolytic disorders. Metformin is an efficient treatment of diabetes with clear beneficial effects. In some cases, this drug is associated with lactic acidosis. This rare but serious condition requires emergency intensive care. Hypoglycemia is linked to tight glycemic objectives. It is the most frequent complication but also the least serious condition.
