Abstract
Clinical research in critical care is now primarily devoted towards the validation of complex physiopathological theories or new therapies. The role of clinical experience has been progressively replaced by a positivist approach. This article aims at underlying the importance of clinical experience, medical reasoning and of the thought processes of abduction and serendipity in clinical research.
