Abstract
Thyrotoxic storm can complicate thyrotoxicosis, involving vital prognostic. Multiple aetiologies can be diagnosed, the most frequent being Graves' disease, multinodular goitre and amiodarone treatment. This review also describes peculiar forms of hyperthyroidism such as thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, thyrotoxicosis associated with pregnancy and hyperkinetic cardiac dysfunction, which is associated with an increased mortality rate and treatment difficulties. Therapeutic means lay on specific treatments such as antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine and surgery. Beta-blocking and digitalic agents are usual symptomatic therapies that may be completed in a few cases by electric cardioversion and circulatory assistance.
