Abstract
Status epilepticus can be misdiagnosed in some circumstances. Nonepileptic pseudo-seizures of psychiatric origin and some movement disorders may mimic convulsive status epilepticus. Postanoxic, metabolic or toxic encephalopathies and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be misidentified as a non-convulsive status epilepticus, if the electroencephalogram (EEG) is misinterpreted. Additional factors, which may contribute to a false diagnosis in these encephalopathies, include the existence of a nonepileptic myoclonus or the suppression of EEG abnormalities by benzodiazepines, even while clinical symptoms may remain. Consideration of both clinical data and the EEG usually permits the correct diagnosis of status epilepticus.
