Abstract
A wide-range of aetiologies may result in status epilepticus (SE). Thus, clinical examination, laboratory tests, and neuroimaging should be hierarchically organized with simultaneous critical cares. Not only reversible causes have to be pointed out, but also underlying or hidden diseases should be diagnosed and treated. Causes of SE in idiopathic or cryptogenic epilepsy and in new-onset SE are different. Diagnosis should rely on the findings of both largely prescribed chemistry tests and neuroimaging.
