Abstract
Brain microdialysis enables in vivo assessment of concentrations in the extracellular medium. A probe with semi-permeable membrane is introduced into the brain and after diffusion and equilibration with extracellular medium, samples can be collected and analyzed. This review describes the potential applications of brain microdialysis for neurointensive care patients. Fundamental principles, limits of brain microdialysis and useful parameters for clinical practice are also discussed.
