Abstract
21 years ago, I went to work on a neonatal unit in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Four years before this, I had worked for a year in a British run hospital in Saudi Arabia, where although conditions for women were very restrictive, the working conditions were excellent, with plenty of staff, no shortage of resources, and a good salary. So when a friend persuaded me to join her in the UAE where it is much more liberal, I didn't expect the working environment to be very different. It was.
