BackgroundThis descriptive study examined baccalaureate nursing student perceptions of roles played in high-fidelity patient simulation, focusing on the observer role.MethodsQualitative interview and survey data were collected from senior nursing students at two universities (N = 23 observers; N = 27 traditional roles) after completing a scheduled high-fidelity simulation.ResultsDescriptive and qualitative data were analyzed with three themes emerging: conceptualizing the learning experience, capturing the big picture, and connecting with the team. Themes were supported by qualitative written survey responses and the clinical judgment model by Tanner (2006).ConclusionsSimulations can provide learning opportunities for the observer in each simulation phase. Implications include framing the observer as a valued team member and using the best practices to engage the observer.
