Abstract
BackgroundThe BLS AnytimeTM for Healthcare Providers kit, when used for recertification, has yielded outcomes better than those of instructor-led courses. This study compared its effectiveness for initial and renewal certification.MethodIn a comparison group design, 39 individuals seeking initial certification and 49 individuals seeking renewal certification used the kit to learn or refresh skills and, while observed by an instructor, completed the skills test on manikins that captured objective performance data. Results and conclusionsLearners performed equally well on knowledge, assessed skills, and performance after practice for equivalent lengths of time, demonstrating effectiveness of the kit for both initial and renewal certification.
