Abstract
Bone health is an important factor in an individual's overall health. The promotion of bone health must begin before birth and continue throughout life into old age. The high prevalence of osteoporosis and the significant burden associated with osteoporotic fractures highlights the importance of effective screening and detection. Educational and medical interventions to address unique bone health requirements at each stage of life must be recognized and optimized. The nurse practitioner (NP) is uniquely positioned to identify patients who are at increased risk for osteoporosis and related fractures. We should provide education about bone health and can give practical suggestions for preventing falls and fractures. We often identify patients for whom pharmacologic treatment options, including bisphosphonate therapy, might be beneficial. Although some of the most effective interventions for reducing risk of fractures are simple and inexpensive, it is important to offer patients the most effective interventions appropriate given their level of risk. Osteoporosis is a multifactorial condition, and by employing a combination of strategies, the risk for developing the disease and for experiencing related fractures can be decreased.
