The First Pelvic Examination in the Adolescent: An Update

Female adolescents compose 7% of the US population. Adolescence is a time of rapid psychological and physiological changes, yet it is ironic that it is also a time when access and availability to health care services are often limited. The purpose of this article is to provide an update on adolescent sexuality to include indications and timing of the first pelvic examination, history taking and confidentiality issues, and methods to assist the health care provider best meet the gynecologic needs of adolescents.
