Abstract

Although infrequent, termination of a provider–patient relationship is sometimes necessary. Legal issues, as well as ethical issues, must be considered to avoid claims of abandonment and negligence. It is therefore essential to have a standardized process. It is important that nurse practitioners consider the risks and consequences of patient termination. At some point, every provider deals with the question of whether and how to dismiss a problem patient from his or her practice. The reasons for dismissal should be compelling, and every alternative should be explored before terminating the provider–patient relationship.
