Abstract
ABSTRACTImmunodeficiencies are being seen more frequently in everyday practice, and every parent worries when his or her child has several infections. “Does my child have an immunodeficiency?” “When should I be concerned?” “Should I get a more detailed workup for my child?” This article reviews the physiology of the immune system and outlines the history, physical, and laboratory evaluations essential for determining whether the child has some form of immunocompromise. This information should prepare nurse practitioners to move forward in collecting information that will allow them to answer the parent's questions.
