Abstract
In the 2010 publication, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) called on nurses to play a leadership role in reforming and improving the healthcare system. 1 The case for healthcare reform has rarely been more compelling. In 2008 alone, the United States spent $2.3 trillion on healthcare, a figure that represents a 3-fold increase in healthcare costs in less than 2 decades.2 By 2050, healthcare expenditures are expected to increase to over 35% of our national gross domestic product.3
