Abstract

The American healthcare industry is in the midst of epic change. Recognizing that it can no longer afford what has been built into the largest, and arguably, the most bureaucratic industry in the country, Americans voted to make a change. Utilizing traditional strategic and planning methods, no one could have anticipated the consequences of making such a widespread change to an extremely complicated system. Complicating the change is the reality that many of the industry's stakeholders remain entrenched in an archaic mindset, rooted in financial rewards for providing service to the sick rather than in promoting health to the larger population.
