Congenital heart disease (CHD) occurs in approximately 6 to 12.5 of 1000 live births. Genetic counseling and fetal echocardiography now offer the family a window into the womb and an opportunity for earlier informed decision making. The presentation of infants born with CHD may be well anticipated and generally includes the categories of cyanosis, cardiovascular collapse, congestive heart failure, or combinations of these. This article will explore the etiology of CHD and interpretation of clinical assessments. Early and keen assessment will guide the team in initial stabilization measures. The recognition and stabilization of neonates with CHD also includes nursing care supportive of early bonding and an ongoing assessment of parental responses.
