Abstract
A case study written in the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS) language is useful for teaching novice perioperative nurses. Advantages include a format that follows the well-known nursing process; inclusion of nursing diagnoses, nursing interventions, and patient outcomes specific to patients scheduled for surgery; suggested steps for implementing nursing interventions; and congruence with the AORN Standards and Recommended Practices. An example application of the PNDS to a coronary artery bypass graft patient written by a professional nurse new to perioperative nursing and reviewed by an experienced masters' prepared perioperative clinician is presented.
