Abstract
Social security benefits are governed by the Social Security Code, which the medical expert and the French public welfare system refer to, while general practitioners' prescriptions are attached with the overall care of the patient. We note, firstly, that some general practitioners lack knowledge in social legislation, and secondly, that certain socio-professional groups face professional rehabilitation difficulties. The expert appraisal governed by article L. 141-1 is clearly inappropriate to address the issue of the return to work in case of rheumatic or orthopaedic pathology. This dispute between general practitioners and the French public welfare system is social and political rather than medical; it shows the need for the government and the social partners to develop actions for workstation layout and professional rehabilitation. Moreover, vocational training measures for general practitioners would be desirable to improve the care of long-term off work patients.
