Abstract
In this review paper, the physiological bases of human adaptation to shift work and night work are first detailed. Recent knowledge on sleep and wake rhythms and on the biological clock are exposed. Then the authors review the recent literature on the medical consequences of shift work and night work: sleep and wake disorders, risk of accidents, cardiovascular diseases, digestive and endocrine diseases, risk of obesity, and cancer.
