Abstract
Europe is historically the birthplace of orthoptics, notably thanks to the pioneer Mary Maddox, and the discipline is now practised across the whole world. Since its beginnings at the start of the 20th century, orthoptics has taken different forms depending on the country, notably with regard to its daily practice and in terms of the training and remuneration of practitioners. The distribution of skills also vary: some countries have favoured optometry over orthoptics, in others the two professions work side by side. These variations however have not prevented the profession from establishing a common foundation and providing possibilities for mobility within the European Union.
