Abstract
Since his origin, Man has tried to master fire in order to keep warm or to eat, either by striking flints, rubbing sticks or by exposing transparent stones to sunlight. However he couldn't have imagined that his quest would one day lead to the compensation of ocular disorders. The history of spectacles is part of the history of Man: what need would there be for precise near-sight in the absence of reading and when life span is so short? Physiological discoveries, techniques, imagination and necessity have constantly developed the concept of spectacles, and this is still true today.
