Le Glaucome

The term glaucoma is used to define pathologies that exhibit specific alterations in the optic nerve following the destruction of retinal ganglion cells. The two major clinical forms are primitive open angle glaucoma and primitive closed angle glaucoma. Assessment of the intraocular pressure is the predominating risk factor in the disease. The determining diagnostic elements are the alteration in visual field and structural anomalies of the papilla and retinal nerve fibres. Technical progress in these two domains has considerably contributed to the detection and management of the disease. Therapeutic progress is being made in all sectors: not only medical but also in the use of physical agents and surgery.
