Abstract
The history of the creation of spectacles dates back to the thirteenth century. At first reserved for the elderly, the object was then acquired by the social elite because of its cost and became a necessity for the well-read. Spectacles were rapidly appropriated by artists who integrated them in their compositions; thus conferring them a strong symbolical power related to contemporary spirituality and moral.
