Abstract
The aim of this article is to schematically evoke the evolution in image representation from the period of the middle ages to the renaissance. Using some examples, it attempts to show that the creation of a work of art and its perception firstly obeys social and cultural criteria, and that the function devolved to an image greatly influences its interpretation.
