Abstract
Constituting 4/5 of the retina, the functional role of the peripheral retina is often overlooked. Now it is a major factor in the sensory interface process with the environment, where it holds a role as important as the central retina. Support of scotopic and mesopic vision by the arrangement of rod photoreceptors, the peripheral retina allows the initial detection of movement in ergopanorama and neurocortical trigger saccades and gaze direction to recognize the intruder. Support for morphoscopic analysis in low and medium spatial frequency luminance, it allows compensation for the collapse of central visual acuity in certain diseases such as AMD. Also because of specific ganglion cells, it operates in the exogenous component of the circadian cycle and thereby on the overall condition of each.
