Abstract
Urinary and anal incontinence are rarely observed in myopathy. This is due to the poor implication of the somatic system (especially striated muscles) in continence physiology. Meanwhile, some cases of fecal incontinence are specifically described in myotonic dystrophy. Beside classical myopathy such as Duchenne myopathy or myotonic dystrophy, a new entity may be discussed in incontinent women with myopathic changes of urethral sphincter and pelvic floor muscles. These myopathic aspects may be analysed by EMG examination. Muscular lesion can determine a stress urinary incontinence because the impossibility to prevent leakage by an anticipated increase of urethral pressure during stress, secondary to muscular damage of the pelvic floor muscles.
