Abstract
The purpose is to determine the functional outcome of patients operated for neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO). This is a retrospective study of patients followed for NHO. The evaluation included a range of movement and a functional assessment. There are 20 patients with 27 joints operated on; the sex ratio is 1.4, the average age is 31.6 years (19-41 years). The operated joints are represented by the knee with 40.7% (11), elbows with 37% (10) and hips with 22.3% (6). All patients received a physical therapy based on continuous passive motion in addition to the functional work. There was a significantly increased mobility at all joints. The score of Merle d'Aubigné-Postel, for those operated on for hip, rose from 6.6 to 8.2. Patients who underwent surgery of knee had their functional status improved by gait recovery in one patient and acquire a good seat for the others. The functional assessment of patients operated for elbow has improved the possibilities and recovered global feeding, cleanliness and grooming. Surgery of NHO's main objective is to restore joint mobility and function. The results are generally good as confirmed by our results.
