Abstract
Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm. It accounts for only 1Â to 2Â % of malignant tumours of the uterus. ESS arising in extra-uterine sites is unusual and the pathogenesis remains unknown in the absence of endometriosis. The authors report a case of ESS arising in the abdominal cavity without associated endometriosis in a 76-year-old woman. Their focus was to stress a careful morphological examination combined with immunohistochemical studies and consideration of ESS in the differential diagnosis that would help in obtaining an accurate diagnosis in these rare circumstances. They describe morphological and immunochemical features with review of the literature.
