Abstract
Papillomas are fibro-epithelial benign breast tumors. Detection is often induced by symptoms of nipple discharge. Since papillomas have an uncertain biological behavior (low percentage of malignant papilloma - 4 to 15 % -, evolution towards a malignant alteration possible, differential diagnosis with DCIS sometimes difficult), it is mandatory to obtain a definitive histological diagnosis. Because of the clinical symptoms of discharge, it is preferable to have a treatment. With modern ultrasound techniques, even small papillomas can be well detected, and ultrasound is an excellent method to make guided interventional procedures. With vacuum assisted biopsy, a reliable histological diagnosis of papilloma is possible, and at the same time a complete excision of the lesion can be obtained. The authors discuss the choice of the interventional material and describe in detail the procedure, which has become a valuable alternative to surgery for small solitary symptomatic lesion, at lower cost.
