Abstract
MRI plays an increasingly important role in the lesional workup of fetal pathology, the gravid uterus, and the placenta. Two-dimensional sonographic exploration of the placenta is sometimes found to be limited by the uterine wall's acoustic characteristics and/or its reduced accessibility because of its location. MRI completes the ultrasound workup and contributes to the search for signs of insertion problems such as placenta accreta, in particular with placenta previa (5%-10% risk of placenta accreta) or when there is a history of cesarian or myomectomy. Providing a wide field of vision, the entire uterus can be viewed with MRI, which facilitates the exploration of myomas during pregnancy so that delivery can be planned. Given its high resolution in contrast and the possible injection of contrast agents, MRI also has indications in the exploration of postpartum placental residues.
