Abstract
Rectal Endoscopic Ultrasonography (Rectal EUS) allows endoscopic evaluation of the rectum and sigmoid colon, and surrounding structures. Therefore it is a useful examination in cases of known or suspected deep pelvic endometriosis. A diagnosis of intestinal involvement by endometriosis is confirmed when rectal EUS shows bowel wall infiltration by endometriosis, mainly next to the utero-sacral ligaments, torus uteri, or left ovary. When surgical resection is necessary, rectal EUS allows precise “staging” of digestive endometriosis, thereby helping in the choice between laparotomy or laparoscopy.
