Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the rationale behind developing a formal, structured approach to preceptorship for newly qualified radiographers. It will look at the definition of preceptorship and its aims and objectives. It will examine the changes in educational strategies and how these have impacted on the clinical competence of newly qualified radiographers. It will also debate the impact of local and national policy on the curriculum design of the programme. Finally, it will consider the programme design itself and examine its potential effectiveness in achieving the intended outcomes.
