Abstract
PurposeThis article discusses the roles of the student and the supervisor in the process of undertaking and writing a dissertation, a potentially daunting process.ResultsThe authors have supervised and examined students within 20 institutions and the personal insights gained result in the guidance provided within this article.ConclusionThe authors conclude that much can be done by students working with their supervisors, to improve progress in both performing and writing up the dissertation. Taking account of these factors will ease the dissertation process and move students progressively towards the production of a well-written dissertation.
