Abstract
The transfusion of a blood product to a child is associated with a greater risk of harm when compared to an adult. In certain situations transfusion is necessary and so the benefits have to be balanced against potential adverse risks. This article will present information concerning blood transfusion thresholds in children, calculations for maximal tolerated blood loss and the concept of massive transfusion protocols.
