Abstract
The importance of scientific evidence has been recognised in clinical medicine only recently, and most of this evidence has been obtained from clinical trials. We need to be sceptical when reading trial reports in journals because there are commercial, institutional and personal influences on the ‘impartial’ use of scientific methods in medicine; one-third of all major original clinical research is later proved wrong.
