Abstract
To measure the development of safety climate in ICU by an adapted questionnaire. The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) is a measurement tool of safety climate with a specific version for ICU (SAQ-ICU). The aim of this study was to translate and validate this North-American questionnaire in French, and to measure the safety climate in 2Â ICUs. With the authors' consent, we realised a French version tested and submitted to a back-translation. This questionnaire comprises 30Â items exploring 6Â dimensions of safety climate (teamwork climate, job satisfaction, perceptions of management, safety climate, working conditions, stress recognition) considered as developed if the score is >Â 75%, “needs improvement” if <Â 50%. The questionnaire was proposed to all staff members (doctors, nurses, nurse-aids). One hundred and sixteen questionnaires were received (83% response rate). Responders had a median age of 36Â years, a median job seniority of 10Â years with 4.5Â years in the 2Â ICUs. The results are comparable in the 2Â units, four dimensions out of six obtain a score between 50Â and 75% and 2Â dimensions (perceptions of management, working conditions) “needs improvement”. SAQ-ICU allows the study of the security climate in an ICU. A nationwide study is ongoing using a French version of the questionnaire in order to study its psychometric properties.
