Abstract
Iron deficiency prevalence is underestimated in the critically ill, because its diagnosis is difficult in presence of inflammatory response. The discover of hepcidin, the master regulator of iron metabolism, has opened new perspectives for iron deficiency diagnosis and treatment in these patients.
