Abstract
Some clinical interventions are capable of creating expectations of improvement in the patient and family, similar to the placebo effect. These include telephone follow-up, physician sitting in during the medical visit, physical examination, the use of question prompt lists before medical consultations, providing an audio record of consultations, asking patients how they prefer to make their decisions, and improving the physical environment in patient care areas. More research is needed in this important area.
