Abstract
The incidence of multi-drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii outbreaks is rapidly increasing in intensive care units (ICU) and the related mortality rates amount up to 25%. A. baumannii can amazingly resist to extreme environmental challenges (it can survive up to 4 weeks on dry surfaces) and rapidly develop drug resistances. According to the Outbreak Database (www.outbreak-database.com) 85% of the A. baumannii outbreaks occurred in ICUs. In 23% of the cases the outbreak led to ICU closure to allow decontamination by disinfection. A. baumannii represents a growing threat for ICU patients.
