SummaryPatients with alcohol use disorders are a particular challenge in perioperative medicine. The frequency of alcohol use disorders in perioperative medicine is approximately 20% of medical and surgical in-patients. This determines a 2- to 4-times higher perioperative morbidity. In the present contribution we discuss the necessity of using validated screening methods, short interventions, perioperative withdrawal prophylaxis, adapted anesthesia care and postoperative assessment of delirium.
