Abstract
This review aims to provide an update on the concepts and values of nutritional recommendations. Special emphasis is placed on the dietary reference intakes published by the Institute of Medicine in the USA because of their importance and wide international use. The dietary guidelines (referring to foodstuffs rather than nutritients) most widely used in Spain are also discussed. Likewise, the recommended intakes of macro- and micronutrients according to their roles in the prevention of chronic diseases are also reviewed.
