Abstract
With a prevalence of 1 out of every 18,000 births, six cases of cerebral venous thrombosis in the puerperal period were diagnosed during the last 15 years. The period between symptom onset and definitive diagnosis decreased as the index of suspicion increased, based on the presence of migraines, confusional syndrome and psychomotor excitation. Associated convulsions were found in four patients, with motor deficits in three. In addition to the thrombophilic state characteristic of the immediate puerperal period, antiphospholipid syndrome was found in one patient and hyperhomocysteinemia in three patients, with associated factor V Leiden in one patient. Heparin therapy reversed the clinical picture a few days after onset. All the puerperal women recovered without sequels.
