Abstract
It is well known that consumption of tobacco has an impact on the smoker's health and individuals who live with them (environmental tobacco smoke). This growing health interest has led to the study of the widely different implications of tobacco, one of which is the health of the offspring. This paper reviews the literature to assess possible genotoxic effects of tobacco on the offspring. In some studies, despite the epidemiological difficulties, parental smoking (maternal/paternal) is associated with an increased risk of acute leukaemia, while other studies have produced inconclusive results, possibly due to genetic susceptibilities.
